East Limerick GAA awards shine spotlight on those who work in shadows

The Old Time Gaels of East Limerick will mark 21 years of celebrating others
THE OLD Time Gaels of East Limerick will mark 21 years of celebrating unsung heroes who never asked for anything in return for their community ethos on December 27.
Since its inception, the awards ceremony has shone a light on those who worked tirelessly, often behind the scenes, in roles that were vital but unheralded administrators, fundraisers, field caretakers, referees, and countless others.
“Their efforts kept the heart of the GAA beating strong in East Limerick. On the field, others brought glory to their clubs, division, and county, embodying the passion and commitment that define the Gaelic Athletic Association.
“As we gather to celebrate 21 years of The Old Time Gaels of East Limerick, we honour not only the milestones achieved but the spirit and dedication of the people who built and nurtured this cherished tradition,” said Ger O’Connell, on behalf of the committee founded in 2003. It is led by chairman Eddie Wade (South Liberties), Mr O’Connell (Pallasgreen), secretary, along with Seamus Walsh (Ahane); Tony Hickey (Murroe/Boher); Michael Clarke (Cappamore) and John Cooney (South Liberties).
“It has become a cornerstone of gratitude and recognition for the unsung heroes of Gaelic games. It is fitting to reflect on that inaugural night 21 years ago when Michael Croker (South Liberties), Red Bill Lonergan (Doon), and Jimmy Butler Coffey (Cappamore) were the first recipients. The event, remembered for its unique ambiance due to a power cut, was illuminated by candlelight, a symbolic nod to the enduring spirit of the Gaels, who have always thrived despite challenges.
“In recent years, the partnership between The East Board and The Old Time Gaels has enriched this tradition, ensuring that each Awards Night continues to grow in significance. We dedicate this gathering to the memory of past recipients who have since gone to their eternal rest. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a nainmneacha,” said Mr O’Connell.
The recently retired kitman for the Limerick senior hurlers says they are privileged to have the support of many who make this event special.
“Our heartfelt thanks to the Millennium Centre Staff for their hospitality, St Ailbe's Credit Union for their steadfast sponsorship and to Marie Therese Tierney for her beautiful entertainment. Special appreciation goes to Richard Tierney for his sponsorship, Cube Print for their exceptional work on the programme, and Matt O’Callaghan for graciously serving as MC,” said Mr O’Connell.
This year’s event takes place on Friday, December 27.
