End-of-an-era as well-loved Limerick shop to close down

Printing shop to cease trading after 43 years as owners retire
A FAMILY printing business is to cease trading this week after more than 40 years in Limerick city centre.
Polyprint, which sells a wide variety of memorial cards, bookmarks, wallet cards, acknowledgement cards, notepaper and keyrings, has traded on Catherine Street since 1983.
Limerick’s first instant print shop, it was opened by Jim McDermott and his daughter Mary, of Rhebogue, after Jim changed careers to become a printer.
He died in 2024, aged 95, but remained involved in Polyprint right up until the end.
Mary paid tribute to the shop’s loyal customers across Limerick city and county, as well as Tipperary, Clare and Kerry, praising their “loyalty, friendship and support”.
The shutters will come down for the final time at 5.30pm on Friday, as Mary and her siblings retire.
The closure has been in the planning for more than a year, and Mary said they were happy to be calling it a day.
“We have no immediate plans for the future but no doubt we will enjoy it,” she added.
Friday is expected to be an emotional occasion, with generations of the Polyprint family expected to drop in and pay tribute.
