GARDAI are advising householders across Limerick to properly secure their oil tanks - particularly if visiting friends or relatives over the Christmas period.

It follows a theft incident in County Limerick during Christmas Week which is being highlighted.

"A homeowner in Patrickswell reported that €200 worth of home heating oil was taken from his oil tank overnight. It is important to know that you can protect your oil tank with a tank lock and an alarm," said divisional crime prevention officer Sergeant Ber Leetch.

"Sensor lighting is also a good deterrent especially if the oil tank can be seen from the house," she added.

Investigations into the theft incident are continuing and anyone with information is asked to come forward.
