Incident of home renovation break-in prompts gardaí to issue warning

GARDAÍ in Limerick are warning homeowners about potential break-ins while renovating their homes.

A case where thieves broke into a renovation and damaged the inside in Castleconnell has prompted gardaí to issue a statement.

“Thieves broke a downstairs window and gained access to the property, causing damage to the property internally,” said Sergeant Michelle O’Halloran, crime prevention officer at Henry Street Garda Station.

“If you are in the process of renovating or building a new home in a remote location, ask neighbours to keep an eye on it and to report any suspicious activity to local gardaí,” she said.

Additionally, Sgt O’Halloran offered advice for holidaygoers on protecting their homes while away.

“I recommend that you make your home appear as if it is occupied by using light timer switches, which will give the impression that somebody is inside,” she said.

“A television simulator is also a good purchase, when plugged in, it appears from outside the house as if a television is on, leading burglars to believe somebody must be home.

“Set your home intruder alarm and if you do not have one installed make this a priority and get one fitted. If criminals break in and the alarm is ringing, they will not delay for fear of being caught.”
