GARDAI are probing if an aggravated burglary in Limerick city was a case of "mistaken identity".

Limerick Live understands that one of the lines of enquiry being followed is that the perpetrators broke into the “wrong house”.

The aggravated burglary occurred at a residential property in the Ballysimon Road area.

Three masked individuals entered the premises at approximately 9pm on Friday night, February 28, and during the course of the incident, a man, aged in his 30s, was assaulted.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for his injuries, which are believed to be non-life threatening at this time.

It is understood the man’s assailants were armed with a number of weapons including a crowbar, baseball bat and hammer. It is believed the victim suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs.

It is thought the masked men demanded money from the injured party.

One local told Limerick Live: “It is shocking. It is the quietest estate in the city and the victim is the quietest guy living there.”

A technical examination of the scene was conducted by gardaí and investigations are ongoing.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information regarding this incident to come forward.

In particular, gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the area of Ballysimon Road and Old Cork Road, Limerick on Friday, February 28, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, and saw anything which may have drawn their attention.

Any road users who may have video camera footage (including dash-cam) from this area at this time, are asked to make it available to gardaí.

Any persons who observed the movements of a dark-coloured jeep are also asked to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
