In Pictures: A look back at the King's Island flooding 10 years on

The flooding was described as some of the worst flooding in living memory at the time

FEBRUARY marks the 10th anniversary of a flooding event that saw hundreds of people evacuated from their homes in Limerick city.

Residents from the King's Island area had to be rescued from their home after the Rivers Shannon and Abbey burst their banks on February 1.

Strong winds and high tides caused flooding along the west coast of Ireland with Limerick particularly affected.

Described as the worst flooding in living memory, several hundred people needed assistance from emergency services and volunteers to help them escape their homes.

Flood defences had been put in place however, they were unable to cope with the combinartion of high tides, strong winds and torrential rain.
