“IN OUR culture, there's an awful lot of negativity, so this has helped us to concentrate on something positive for a change.”
Nora O'Neill shared this sentiment which rings through in Traveller communities around the county and beyond at the Traveller Pride Art Exhibition titled Moments of Truth, at City Hall.
Hosted by Limerick Traveller Health Programme, with Limerick Social Service Council CLG, 12 Traveller women from different parts of Limerick came together to showcase seven large canvas paintings and two quilts completed.
Nora herself painted an artwork called My Family, to honour her children, and a new generation.
Bridgie, a member of the team who created the Lady Of Limerick quilt, spoke on why they decided to represent Traveller life with that scene.
“We wanted to make something that had Traveller women at its centre, because Traveller women are the heart of Traveller families,” she said.
With the flowing Shannon and King John's Castle as the landscape, the heart of the quilt is the depiction of a Traveller woman.
“They are daughters, sisters, wives, mothers and aunts - they are fixers of all problems that often go unseen,” she outlined.
A powerful medium to express emotions, stories, and culture, the art created by Limerick Travellers for this event captures the essence of their rich heritage.
