In Pictures: First female local ‘Lord Mayor’ publishes two new stories to suit all

A LIMERICK-born author has launched two books for all types of readers to enjoy - one which is an autobiography, the other, a fictional heartwarming tale.

Agnes Maguire, 76, who is originally from the Ardnacrusha area, published two books: ‘The Life Story of the Former Lord Mayor of the Liberties' and ‘The Parcel from America’ in Limerick’s Absolute Hotel.

The first woman to be given the title ‘Lord Mayor’, Agnes was voted in by her community and neighbours in the South Liberties area of Dublin in 1992, due to her voluntary work and selflessness.

“I was elected twice by the people in the Liberties area as Lord Mayor of the Liberties because I did a lot of voluntary work for the elderly and in the community itself, as well as winning neighbour of the year,” Agnes said.

She was given the title as part of a special community fundraiser that took place in the South Liberties area in Dublin at that time.

Agnes went to St Mary's school in Limerick as a girl. Agnes married and moved to Dublin. Her close ties with Limerick are recounted in her new book.
