FORMER Ireland, Lions and Ulster Rugby captain Rory Best has praised the business community in Limerick and the wider public for its support of his endurance challenge which passed through the city at the weekend.
The rugby legend and his small team of supporters landed in Limerick on Sunday afternoon and departed this Monday morning following a fundraising breakfast at Thomond Park.
Rory is currently embarking on his second ‘Rory’s Miles 2 Mayo’ challenge to help children’s cancer charity Cancer Fund for Children build a new therapeutic short break centre in Cong, County Mayo for children and families navigating the challenges of a childhood cancer diagnosis.
The ten-day walk, which aims to raise €2m, concludes later this week in the County Mayo village.
While in Limerick city, Rory also visited the University of Limerick campus and the recently-opened International Rugby Experience at O'Connell Street where he was greeted by former internationals including Paul O'Connell, Billy Holland and David Wallace.
Speaking as he departed from Limerick, Rory said: “Thomond Park was never an easy venue to visit over the years but today was something very special. I’m blown away by the turn-out, many old friends who I was delighted to meet up with again but also new ones who have, equally, pledged their support for this wonderful cause.”
Regarding his goal of raising €2m for the much-needed facility, he said: “I’m delighted to be doing my bit to help bring another therapeutic facility to Ireland for families impacted by childhood cancer.”
