KEANES JEWELLERS is planning an expansion of its Limerick branch.

The firm, which is located at a prime corner of O’Connell Street in the city centre, is seeking to increase its footprint by also taking on the neighbouring unit in William Street.

Up to 2019, that was home to another jewellery firm, H Samuel.

But the British firm shut its only local branch, leaving the unit in William Street vacant.

It now looks like Keanes, which was founded in Cork will move in.

It comes 22 years after the jeweller first came to Limerick.

Patrick Keane, a director of Keanes jewellers, said since then, there has been “substantial growth and positive change” throughout the city centre.

“The planned expansion we have on O’Connell Street supports our long-standing commitment to Limerick and the local community. Our building, with its prominent corner location at the junction of William Street and O’Connell Street, is a real focal point in the heart of Limerick city and our planned development strives to further enhance Limerick’s retail district,” he said.

The director added that Keanes is “very positive about its future in Limerick.”

According to documents lodged with Limerick City and County Council, the expansion will bring about a renovation of both Keanes initial premises and the former H Samuel unit.

There will also be an upgrade to the exterior of both stores.

In a design statement, the firm wrote that glass, stone cladding and brick will be used.

“It’s intended to create a unified modern look and establish a scheme of architectural excellence using high-quality materials,” they added.

A decision is due by Monday, April 15 next.
