Election bid: Dean Quinn

MOYROSS man Dean Quinn is to contest this summer’s local election.

The community activist, who lives at Sarsfield Gardens in the northside estate, will run as an Independent in the election, scheduled for Friday, June 7.

It’s the second time Mr Quinn, a youth justice worker by profession, has sought election to Limerick City and County Council.

In 2019, he picked up 448 first preference votes, a haul which increased to 768 after transfers.

It kept him in the running for a council seat until the penultimate count, a feat he admits he never expected to achieve.

Now, he says he wants to go one better.

“I want people to vote for me not because they know me, but they know I can make change. Hopefully it will be a good campaign and I can get over the line this time,” he told the Limerick Leader.

“The reason I want to get involved is to help a lot of people along the way as best I can. There are a lot of issues out there, the homelessness crisis is still on the agenda, mental health, proper facilities must be put in place. Even the city centre, it's sad to say it's not like it was years ago. There used to be a great buzz in town going forward. We need to bring that back,” he added.

Mr Quinn, who has campaigned with Aontu for some of the past five years, said he had decided to go as an Independent again after talking with his supporters over the Christmas period.
