AFTER his family were told at birth that he would not live past the age of ten, Seamus Mooney, is the oldest man in Ireland with Down Syndrome, and celebrates world Down Syndrome Day as a member of a Limerick based charity.

At the age of 76, Seamus is a staple member of Down Syndrome Limerick, and this Tuesday, March 21, sees the commemoration of World Down Syndrome Day, which Seamus is taking part in to celebrate difference, embrace differing abilities and promote inclusion.

"Being the oldest person with Down syndrome in Ireland doesn’t stop him from celebrating," said a post by the charity via social media, as he just finished commemorating another St Patrick's Day.

Often celebrated by "rocking" colourful, or mismatched socks, the Limerick charity hosts a number of activities for all members and their families on the day.

From coffee mornings to sock making, baking and even a spot of dancing, the group "rock out" in honour of their important place in society.

Not only are the group goers and their families celebrating, but one Limerick politician has sent the charity a congratulatory video for the day that's in it.

Councillor Sarah Kiely, Limerick City East, took to social media to share her well wishes saying, "I'd like to wish all my friends and their families at Down Syndrome Limerick a very happy World Down Syndrome Day." She held up a pair of odd socks to "recognise" and "celebrate our differences."

The Fine Gael councillor urged donations to the cause, as the charity aim to raise €1,000 to support those who need the charity most.

Down Syndrome Limerick, supports people of all ages with Down syndrome, through therapies like Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy, school support programmes, education and employment programmes and social activities. To donate to the cause, click here.
