Limerick at its very best for 20th annual Riverfest

Thousands arrive in city to enjoy barbecue, outdoor swim, and much much more!

LIMERICK was at its very best this Saturday as tens of thousands of people descended on the city for Riverfest.

Despite rain threatening at times to make a breakthrough, the city centre remained dry for the second day of Limerick's flagship festival.

Once again, the Riverfestival village at Arthur's Quay Park is the focal point of proceedings as a party atmosphere took hold.

The zipline was back giving people a bird's eye view of the River Shannon. And the grounds of St Mary's Cathedral was home to a selection of classic cars.

There were sensational sights, smells and sounds at the barbecue competition on the city's boardwalk at Harvey's Quay. The contest was won by Latino Malekum, a group of friends from Central and South America, who have made Limerick their home.placeholder image

They impressed the judges with rib-eye steak, corn-bread with Feta cheese and honey, plus babecued potatoes with ginger-sour cream.

Chef Rafael Berrea and his pals won €1,000 between them.

He said they will definitely celebrate this Saturday evening!

"I can't believe we won. It was an amazing, a big experience. So nice. It was really enjoyable for us. After this, we will celebrate our good win. And maybe we will go into a nightclub," he laughed.

Among the many people in Limerick today were Michelle Cleary from Clonmacken, who travelled into the city with her children Billy, 1, and Jack, 3, plus father Gerard.placeholder image

"It's really good. I've really enjoyed going on the rides in Arthur's Quay," smiled Billy.

The fun continues in Limerick on Sunday, when thousands of people will pound the city streets again, as the Great Limerick Run takes place.

This Saturday and Sunday night, Howley's Quay will again be the place to be as House Limerick host a street party.

And the skies over the river Shannon will be lit up with a spectacular fireworks display on Sunday night.

On Friday night, there were huge crowds in the city as a giant-winged pegasus stalked the streets, as part of a new parade.

French group Planète Vapeur brought the spectacle to the city.

There is far more to do. See www.riverfest.ie for a full listing of events.
