Limerick author gives full reign to her fantasy with new series

FOLLOWING the success of her first book, Croom native Martha Begley-Schade has published the Merlin Fairy Series, just in time for Christmas.
The children’s author wrote her first story about three years ago – one telling the tale of a pigeon who found himself being bullied in the woods.
Speaking of the success of her first book, Martha said: "I never expected the response I got to that book. It led to more and I completed five books, all about animals experiencing some social issues - those books were my Merlin Woods books."
To give “full reign” to her fantasy, Martha crafted The Merlin Fairy Series.
“I could describe events that would lead to learning about the importance of apologising, the limits to pranking others, the beauty of including others that are different to ourselves, how to get through family breakups, and the most requested topic, how to cope with anxiety,” she explained.
Through her books, the storyteller wants to convey that life is like a river; it winds and twists, but always moves forward.
Her ultimate goal is to help children by writing about topics such as bullying, friendship, kindness, teamwork, finding good guidance in life, depression and persevering as a friend.
Martha believes storytelling is a vital tool in any family, and that it helps children to cope better in life.
“When you tell a child a story, they are more receptive and willing to learn from you. That is, after all, our responsibility as adults. We have to guide our children,” she said.
To support discussion, each of the books from her series include pointers at the end. “The books can be viewed as platforms upon which you can broach these topics with children and help nurture their wellbeing through storytelling”, concluded the author.
Martha’s books are available in Brodericks Spar in Croom, as well as online and in most Limerick bookshops.
