A LIMERICK facility supporting children with complex medical needs has been marked largely compliant following an inspection.

St Gabriel’s Children’s Respite Centre, based in Mungret, welcomed an examiner from the Health Information and Quality Authority who provided an overall assessment of the facility.

The report published by the watchdog praised the attitude of staff members in the facility, stating they “were found to support residents in a positive and caring manner”.

The inspector, who attended the facility in January, reviewed questionnaires provided by occupants.

“Comments made in these included ‘I am very happy with the care given’ and 'the staff treat the children like their own and not just a work chore to be completed’.”

“The staff members supporting the residents were observed and overheard to interact with residents in a pleasant, warm, friendly and caring manner throughout,” the inspector added.

The report acknowledged “staffing challenges” were preventing the centre operating fully, and some additional guidance was required for staff to support the behaviour of one resident.

It asked that staff complete training in de-escalation and intervention by the end of this month.
