Limerick business wins annual Tidy Towns award

The hardware store won the award after a public vote
STAFF of a well-loved city centre hardware store are celebrating after winning the annual Limerick City Tidy Towns prize.
JC Daly’s Hardware, located in William Street, were named the overall Tidy Towns award winner for 2023 following an online public vote.
Roger and Tony Daly from the family firm, founded in 1957, were present at a special ceremony in The Glen Tavern to collect their prize.
Roger told the Limerick Leader the award was unexpected, and he had only attended the ceremony to support the work of the volunteers who keep the city’s streets clean.
“We didn’t think it would be us,” he smiled. “I hope this will highlight the work they do. Their work goes without being seen.
"Normally around this time of year, with Good Friday, we hear about the Team Limerick Clean-Up. But they work to keep the city clean all year round.”
Roger admits it can be “soul-destroying” to see people dropping litter, saying it’s only “10% of people” who pick up rubbish off the ground, and “go the extra mile.”
Limerick City Tidy Towns volunteers had awarded JC Daly’s the award for November and December in recognition of the way it had its front decorated for the Christmas season.
As a result of being one of six bi-monthly winners last year, it joined the public vote where it came top of the tree.
Speaking of Daly’s, Maura O’Neill, Limerick Tidy Towns said: “We usually select our November-December winners specifically for their Christmas windows and décor which of course was true of Daly’s, but it has to be said that their signage, lighting and beautifully-painted exterior also looks great all year round.”
She added: “They also take great pride in the street and alleyway near the store, undertaking regular cleanups which is much appreciated by our volunteers who cover that patch.”
Another family business in the city centre, O’Mahony’s Booksellers took second place.
Tidy Towns volunteers meet to stage clean-ups of the city at 11am on Sunday and 6pm on Wednesday.
