GARDAÍ in Limerick have today launched a day of action to tackle anti-social behaviour on public transport.
Operation Twin Tracks is in partnership with Iarnród Éireann, Transdev Ireland (Luas) and the National Transport Authority.
The operation has also targeted intercity and commuter routes in Limerick and Tipperary divisions including Limerick, Limerick Junction, Castledonnell, Birdhill, Nenagh, Cloughjordan, Roscrea, Ballybrophy, Templemore, Thurles, Tipperary, Cahir, Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir. There are also operations in Cork, Galway, Dublin, Sligo, Mayo and other counties.
Today - the national day of engagement has been aimed at ensuring public safety, protecting life and property, engaging with the public on crime prevention advice, support public transport personnel and preventing crime, as well as improving rail safety.
Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries, Garda National Community Engagement Bureau said: “This engagement day affords An Garda Síochána the opportunity to maintain a visible presence on board these services while encouraging security and safety on board while preventing and detecting anti-social behaviour.”
The two primary elements of the plan are community engagement and rail safety, which will be achieved by high visibility public engagement and delivery of crime prevention advice. High visibility patrolling will concentrate on rail and light rail transport within the Dublin Metropolitan Region (DMR) and on intercity routes nationwide.
Local community policing members, supported by crime prevention officers, will operate these community engagement stands at Connolly and Heuston stations and at various hubs across the regions.
Mary Considine, chief executive of Iarnród Éireann said: “The extensive and high profile public engagement through Operation Twin Tracks complements the ongoing, proactive engagement between Iarnród Éireann, An Garda Síochána, the NTA and other public transport operators year-round.
“Joint proactive patrols, rapid Garda response hubs at twenty locations across the Intercity network, and cooperation on specific event plans nationally and locally demonstrate the partnership between An Garda Síochána and public transport operators across the country.”
