Limerick council document mix-up causes confusion

COUNCILLORS from the Adare/Rathkeale municipal district shared their “disappointment” after a mix-up with wording in a document.

During the bi-monthly meeting of Limerick City and County Council, one of the items on the agenda was to approve the Chief Executive's Report for the months of November and December.

The report stated that the plans for the Adare Public Realm had been completed and were now being presented to the council for approval.

However, councillors from the municipal district stated that the plan had not been brought to them for approval before it had been included in the report.

Councillor Adam Teskey said the plan had been brought to a district meeting a number of months earlier and councillors had asked for it to be put back out for public consultation.

However, the plan was then included in the report to be signed off on by the full council.

After the mistake was pointed out the matter was postponed.

Council officials clarified that the chairperson's report was merely a “summary of activities” and there was an error in the description in the report which stated the public realm plan was completed, not updated as it should have said.

Cllr Teskey said he was “perplexed” over the matter and asked for clarity on how the plan had been included in the report.

Councillor Stephen Keary said he was “extremely annoyed” over the matter and that  the plan needed to come before the district “ASAP” for their approval before being brought before the full council once again.

Addressing the council, Mr Keary said: “If you want to run a dictatorship by all means work away but you won't last long at that”.

Meanwhile Councillor Kevin Sheahan said that councillors had “never been treated in this fashion” and said the district were owed an apology.

He added that the responsible person for the error in the document should apologise to the councillors.
