Limerick council planning revamp for busy road

The width of the carriageway will be cut to six metres
LIMERICK City and County Council bosses are planning a revamp of one of the main roads through the northside estate of Moyross.
Around 200 metres of Moyross Avenue, between the Sarsfield Gardens junction and the western boundary of Corpus Christi primary school are expected to see big changes under the proposals.
One of the major roads in Moyross, it is also home to Corpus Christi Catholic church and the local community centre.
On top of this, the Moyross sports fields are also located at the western end of the road.
If the changes go ahead as planned, a section of Moyross Avenue will be realigned through the parish church and primary school’s lands.
The width of the carriageway will be cut to six metres.
A new entrance will be constructed at Corpus Christi primary school, with a ‘raised speed table' there.
In essence, this is a larger than usual speed ramp, and is designed to slow vehicles down.
Extra parking spots are planned along the avenue, while 1.8m-wide cycle tracks and two-metre wide footpaths will be introduced on both sides of the road.
Car parking spaces lost as a result of the council’s move to build on Corpus Christi’s land will be replaced to the rear of the church.
The council has said there is “no likelihood of significant effects on the environment” coming from this development.
The public are being invited to have their say on the project between now and Wednesday, March 20.
To do this, either visit the council’s offices in Merchant’s Quay or Dooradoyle.
Alternatively, for more information, telephone 061-556000.
After March 20, councillors will be asked to decide on whether the roadworks go ahead.
