A LIMERICK farmer has had nearly €2,000 worth of diesel stolen from his home.

The man in his 80s went outside to check on his cattle on the night of March 15 when he got a strong smell of diesel in the yard.

He then checked the shed where the diesel tank is stored and discovered that the tank had been emptied. Approximately €1,800 euro worth of diesel was taken.

The man had a lock on the door of the shed but it was not of a very good standard.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station said: "It is important to consider the value of what you are protecting and then expect to spend 10% on security for it.

"Fit a good quality bolt and lock to the shed door and then a tank lock, security is all about layering up so fit exterior lighting and enquire if your house alarm can be extended to your fuel tank."
