STAFF of a Limerick company have become part of what could become a groundbreaking project which hopes to reduce energy bills.

Chisel and Oak, based at O'Curry Street in the city, exists to provide upscaled furniture, and provides a community employment programme.

The facility has also provided a one-stop shop for Ukrainian refugees who came to Limerick in the wake of Russia's invasion of their homeland.

Now, the firm's founder Derrick Amrein has teamed up with MPower, a firm which provides alternative energy solutions.

It's headed up by well known environmentalists Duncan and Dudley Stewart.

Chisel and Oak's staff will be taking part in a unique project to research the impact of community heating initiatives in residential and commercial settings.

At the same time, it's hoped the project will also provide a roadmap to reduce local water temperatures by around one-and-a-half per cent.

The initial project will focus on the facilities of Chisel and Oak and will demonstrate the impact of geo-thermal energy, which sources its heat from below the surface of the earth.

The project will measure this closely in preparation for the rollout of these systems throughout Europe.

It's the first internationally funded research project in Ireland which will impact directly on the cost of living of citizens and reduce the carbon footprint of each participant.
