Limerick homeowner 'terrified' after children 'blasted' fireworks through letterbox

'The impact was so strong that the steel cover of my letterbox blew off into my house and caused damage'
A GROUP of 10 children “blasting” fireworks through a letterbox left the occupants of the house in a Limerick city suburb “terrified”.
One of those inside the property at the time said if nobody was home a spark could have ignited a coat near the door and started a fire.
The incident occurred at a property in an estate in Mungret on Saturday, October 26 after 9pm.
One of the people in the house took to social network Reddit to say a group of around 10 kids placed crackers through a letterbox and blasted them.
“The impact was so strong that the steel cover of my letterbox blew off into my house and caused damage. I was shocked and upset by this. Why are kids behaving like this? What can be done to stop it?” he asks.
Limerick Live reached out to the author who wished to remain anonymous.
“It was terrifying. The women inside were really scared and even started crying,” said the man aged in his early 30s.
He saw around 10 children running away but is unsure of their exact ages.
“The letterbox cover was blown inside the house, striking a wall about three metres away. We had a jacket hanging on a nearby wall, and a small spark could have easily caused a fire, which could have led to unimaginable damage,” he added.
The man said they reported the matter to gardai.
“The gardai mentioned that incidents like this are unfortunately common, especially around Halloween."
The homeowner is putting in additional security measures following advice from gardai.
“We’ve sealed the letterbox cover. We also informed our neighbours and they have sealed theirs as well. We’re planning to install CCTV or a ring camera,” he concluded.
