A LIMERICK man was scammed out of nearly €200 after trying to purchase an item from Facebook marketplace.

On Wednesday, May 24, a man in his 50s from Westbury came across an item for sale on Facebook marketplace.

He made contact with a person from a particular company via Facebook messenger and WhatsApp and decided to purchase the item.

He went into his bank and forwarded €180 to an account number that had been provided by the company employee.

He subsequently got in contact with the company directly who informed him it was a scam and that they do not sell items on Facebook marketplace.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer Henry Street Garda Station said: "Facebook do caution its users that they do not provide any buyer or seller protection so it is essential to take precautions when buying or selling items, this is good advice so take it".
