MOTORISTS, road users and the general public are being urged to exercise extreme caution when out and about in Limerick city and county.

With a new weather warning in place for Limerick status Orange for  Freezing Fog road, footpath and cycle lane surfaces are susceptible to freezing and slippery underfoot conditions, Limerick City and County Council has warned.

The current treatment system for roads, which is concentrated primarily on the National Road Network and strategic Regional Roads, is primarily based on the Road DSS system ice prediction software put in place by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and which involves daily monitoring by the Limerick City and County Council Roads Engineers throughout the season from mid-October to end of April each year.

Hugh McGrath Head of Roads, Traffic and Cleansing said: “We only have capacity to treat 20% of the road network and care should be taken even while using the treated routes.

"Limerick City and County Council are aware of additional requests from the public to treat other roads/paths in the context of a prolonged snap, and while we review such additional requests we have limited resources to extend treatment and must prioritise the main road network.”

Met Éireann this morning issued a status orange freezing fog weather warning for Limerick as well as Clare, Tipperary and most of Leinster.

They said: "Freezing fog, dense in places, will persist through the afternoon and into tonight, leading to very hazardous driving conditions."

The warning, which was issued shortly before 11am this morning, remains in place until midnight on Tuesday, December 13.
