EFFORTS are underway to delay the impending closure of Askeaton Swimming Pool with the Limerick Leader learning of talks about a potential stay with mention of summer closure date.

There have been a number of behind the scenes meetings and discussions over the past 10 days between decision- makers, stakeholders and local councillors about the imminent closure of Askeaton swimming pool - to facilitate refurbishment works.

While nothing has been officially confirmed, the Limerick Leader understands one possibility is that the swimming pool will remain open as normal for users to avail of until June, before then closing for renovation works in the boiler room.

While many will welcome the news if it comes to fruition, following a number of private briefings, the apprehension surrounding what will be a 12- month scheduled closure still remains, as it is a popular amenity that is the only one of its kind between Limerick city and north Kerry.

When the shutdown was announced, dissatisfaction was expressed by the Askeaton community and surrounding areas, due to the manner in which the news was presented to them - a sudden, unexpected and lengthy shutdown.

Discussions often got tense during a public meeting that was held last month, with local residents and pool users expressing concern that the facility would remain permanently shut if it closed suddenly.

Limerick City and County Council has been asked for comment on the possible delay in closing the pool.

Askeaton Swimming Club previously stated it had not ruled out exploring legal options in its quest to halt the closure.

The first scheduled closure date was given as March 16, but talks of keeping the facility open for longer are reportedly underway.

The swimming pool is used by around 2,000 children per week from at least 35 Limerick schools, with many more users coming forward in solidarity.

While it has been accepted by both sides that renovation works arey needed, the hope is that the facility can remain open for as long as possible.
