A LIMERICK publican has been fined over alcohol being sold to a juvenille in his establishment.

Paddy Keogh, aged 58, of the Central bar, Bridge Street, Newcastle West, pleaded guilty to one count of selling intoxicating liquor to a person under 18 years of age.

Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting, said a visit to the licensed premises took place on February 26, 2022.

“The young volunteer ordered a pint of Heineken and a glass of wine. They were not asked for ID by the person (not Mr Keogh)  who served them ,” said Insp Thompson.

Enda O’Connor, solicitor for Mr Keogh, said he was not attempting to absolve blame, on behalf of his client, but the minor used was three weeks shy of their 17th birthday.

“It was a mistake,” said Mr O’Connor, who added that staff have undergone training and multiple signs have been erected in relation to underage drinking.

“A glass of wine and a pint of Heineken are not drinks normally associated with underage drinkers,” said Mr O’Connor.

The solicitor said Mr Keogh has 30 years of trading and has no convictions of this nature.

“He has managed to keep the door open when many others closed. He runs an excellent pub,” said Mr O’Connor.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican fined Mr Keogh €200.
