Limerick town hosts networking event for 'promotion and celebration' of traditional music

AIMING to ‘celebrate tradition’ through music, a joint initiative between three Munster local authorities, including Limerick, has joined for a networking event.
Sliabh Luachra Music Trail has held a networking event in Abbeyfeale, with invited stakeholders from Limerick City and County Council, Cork County Council and Kerry County Council. The name is fitting as the upland region of Sliabh Luachra borders all three counties.
The meeting provided a platform for the arts offices of all three Munster councils to discuss ideas for ‘promoting the celebration and preservation of traditional musical heritage’.
The networking event took place on Thursday April 20 at Abbeyfeale Leens Hotel. The Sliabh Luachra genre of folk music is the playing of the melodeon, tin whistle and other instruments in fiddle style.
Pippa Little, Arts Officer for Limerick City and County Council, said: “Limerick is delighted to be participating in this project with Cork and Kerry.
“It highlights the work and traditions of our Sliabh Luachra musicians and of a number of Limerick festivals including Fleadh by the Feale and the Garry McMahon Singing weekend.
“This delivers by retaining and attracting creative practitioners to live and work in Limerick and by engaging citizens through involvement in culture.”
The Sliabh Luachra Music Trail involves local festival committees working together to create a year round programme of events including concerts, workshops, master classes and lectures. The Sliabh Luachra Musician in Residence project is funded through an Arts Council ‘Invitation to Collaboration Award’.
