Limerick woman who stole property from cars was ‘brainwashed’

A LIMERICK woman who was “brainwashed” by her then partner stole “very personal items” that were in parked vehicles.
The 23-year-old who lives in a village in County Limerick pleaded guilty at Kilmallock Court to two theft charges.
Inspector Gearoid Thompson, prosecuting, said a €150 rose gold watch was taken from a parked vehicle in Ballingarry, Garryspillane on February 16, 2022.
“The defendant was subsequently found in possession of the watch. It was recovered and in good order,” said Insp Thompson.
Exactly a month later - on March 16 - she was charged with stealing a leather handbag from a parked car in Clooncunna, Ballysimon.
Inspector Thompson said the handbag was valued at €250.
“There were a number of personal items inside including a purse containing €20 in cash. The handbag was, unfortunately, not recovered. She has no previous convictions. She was acting in consort with a male,” said Insp Thompson.
The defendant's solicitor, Edel Ryan, said her client has no previous convictions and was in a “toxic relationship” at the time of the incidents.
“He played a more significant role in events. She is 24 and led a chaotic life. She has struggled with her mental health. Coping mechanisms led her to addiction. She is an extremely vulnerable young lady,” said Ms Ryan.
The solicitor said that her client had been threatened and put under pressure by her former partner who had “brainwashed” her. The relationship, the court heard, caused the woman psychological damage.
She and her former partner are no longer together and she is “better for it”, said Ms Ryan.
“She is now trying to get her life back on track and find employment. She sincerely apologises to the victims of her crimes. She would like to gather compensation to the total value of €270,” said Ms Ryan.
Judge Marie Keane said they were “extraordinarily mean offences” commenting: “Their personal space was violated. Very personal items were taken in the course of the enterprise. I note she was under the influence of another but that is no excuse. She was aware of the significance and value of the items,” said Judge Keane, who ordered a probation report.
The defendant was remanded on bail until April 28 for the payment of compensation.
“I'm sure there were other items in the handbag that had a lot of value to the person,” said Judge Keane.
