Limerick’s Learning Festival gains European recognition at Paris Forum

Limerick, Cork, Waterford, and Belfast showcased Ireland’s commitment to inclusive education
LIMERICK took centre stage at the first European and North American Learning Cities Forum in Évry-Courcouronnes, France.
Representing Learning Limerick, Michael MacCurtain of Limerick Chamber Skillnet, presented the city’s innovative approach to lifelong learning at the UNESCO supported event on September 11 and 12.
Limerick joined Cork, Waterford, and Belfast in showcasing Ireland’s commitment to inclusive education.
Michael delivered a presentation highlighting key initiatives, including the Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival, now in its 15th year, and the Learning Ambassador programme.
The 2025 April festival featured over 120 free events under the theme “Literacies for Life”, expanding learning to areas like digital, financial, and health literacy. “The festival has become a real showcase of what’s possible when a whole city commits to learning.
“It’s not just about one week in April, it’s about creating connections, opening doors, and showing that learning is for everyone,” said Michael.
Eimear Brophy, Chair of Learning Limerick, noted the power of collaboration saying, “Limerick’s Learning Festival is a practical expression of lifelong learning in action.
“It demonstrates how education and training providers can work hand in hand with communities to make learning accessible, inclusive, and inspiring,” said Eimear.
Organised with UNESCO's support, the forum brought together learning cities from across Europe and North America to share best practices. Limerick’s participation underscores its growing reputation as a leader in lifelong learning and community-driven education.
