Limerick's new metropolitan district leader vows to put focus on the city centre

Development of Limerick's urban area to be a key goal during Cllr Daniel Butler's year in office
LIMERICK’s new metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler, has pledged to prioritise the city centre during his one-year term.
The Fine Gael councillor acknowledged while housing remains the most pressing issue, his secondary aim is clear.
“My priority during my term, beyond housing, is the heart of our city, Limerick city centre,” he told councillors after donning the chain of office.
“We all know the challenges. But we also know the potential. Our city centre must be a place where people want to live, work, and spend time. A place that is vibrant, safe, welcoming, and full of life,” he said.
As leader of Limerick’s 21-member metropolitan district, which covers the city centre, Cllr Butler says he will ensure at each monthly meeting, the fate of the city will be discussed.
“Having listened closely to the many motions, questions, and comments raised by councillors over the past year, it's clear to me that the future of our city centre is a shared concern and a shared priority,” he said.
“With that in mind, I intend to propose that the city centre be made a standing agenda item for every metropolitan meeting during my term as cathaoirleach. This will ensure that our discussions are structured and efficient and most importantly, that this vital issue gets the consistent focus and attention it deserves.”
He said when he talks about a modern, thriving city, he sees one which puts people at its heart, is walkable, culturally rich and inclusive.
“A place where small businesses and local enterprise can flourish, where public spaces are alive with activity, and where people feel proud to call home,” he said.
“Being realistic, I know that in a one-year term we cannot do everything. But I firmly believe that together, as a council, we can make real, tangible progress on this,” he concluded.
