Gardai say contraband was concealed in vehicle which was stopped on the M7 near Birdhill

A man has been arrested by gardai following a significant drugs seizure on the M7 motorway, close to Limerick city.

Gardaí from Nenagh garda station say they initially responded to a report of a van which was stopped on the M7 in the Birdhill area on Thursday.

They say enquiries were carried out and a subsequent search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a significant quantity of cash and suspected cannabis, both of which were concealed in the vehicle.

The suspected drugs have an estimated value of €280,000 while the cash totalled €20,000. Gardai say a small quantity of cocaine was also seized.

A spokesperson confirmed all of the drugs seized will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis. It's understood enquiries are also being made to establish where the cash came from.

"A male in his 30s was arrested and conveyed to a garda station in County Tipperary. He is currently being detained under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984," said the spokesperson.

No further information has been disclosed publicly and investigations are ongoing.
