A MAJOR business summit next week aims to help local business owners create links with Asian and global markets.

University of Limerick (UL) and the city centre’s Engine building will play host to the event, organised by Ireland’s only Asian think tank, Asia Matters.

The event takes place on Monday, February 26 and Tuesday, February 27.

Day one is in the Pavilion building at UL, while Engine is gearing up to host the second day.

The theme of the summit is driving digital innovation to grow global business.

Among the speakers are local TDs and Ministers of State Niall Collins, Patrick O’ Donovan and Kieran O’ Donnell.

UL president Kerstin Mey will also address the event.

On top of this, former Ireland rugby international Jamie Heaslip, who is now working as the strategic growth lead for payments firm Stripe will address the event.

Stripe was of course founded by Castletroy educated brothers Patrick and John Collison.

Representatives of other firms with big local bases, including Northern Trust and Dell Technologies will also be present.

Asia Matters executive director Martin Murray said: “There are massive opportunities for Irish firms in Asia at the moment. Asia is the world’s most populous continent and 60% of all global output in 2024 is expected to come from Asian economies.”

He also said there are now fresh opportunities for Limerick, and Ireland’s agricultural sector now the Chinese ban on Irish beef has been lifted.
