Mart popular with Limerick farmers celebrates 40 years in business
GORTATLEA Mart is hitting a big milestone this year as it is officially opened 40 years, and it is Maurice Brosnan’s ninth year as manager.
Maurice took over the reigns from his uncle Sean Brosnan, who established the mart with the phenomenal support of his brothers and close friends.
Last week saw the busiest week ever seen at Gortatlea Mart with sales over three days starting with Wednesday’s dairy sale which also met with a tremendous trade with 100% clearance with anything with good quality meeting between €2,000 & €2,600.
Sellers and buyers left very happy with the quality of stock.
Calf, runner and weanling sale Wednesday evening – prices of weanling never seen before. Exports extremely anxious, giving between €3/kg and €4/kg
Thursday saw the sale of cows and stock bulls – an exceptional trade with top quality cows exceeding €3.50/kg-topping with a super CH cow 825kg, €3380 or 4.10/kg and a LMX cow 695kg, €2980 or 4.29/kg.
Store cows also met with a brisk trade with some tremendous prices for continental and dairy store cows.
Friday heifers, young bulls and bullocks sale continued where Thursday’s sale ended with quality beef heifers regularly selling well in excess of €3/kg.
Exceptional demand for all types store and beef cattle regularly making between €3 and €4 per kg with a large number of AA on store exceeding €3. Continental beef and store bullocks were also an exceptional trade with some very fancy prices paid - a super pair of BBX BLKs weighed in at 792kg and sold for €3020 or €3.81/kg
