The queue - four abreast in places - snakes along the city centre street

MAJOR QUEUES have stretched along Catherine Street in the city this Thursday, as crowds have gathered outside a well-known Limerick retailer - but it isn't match tickets these shoppers are hoping to score!

Although doors did not open until 11am, the line began forming early, and the queue soon snaked onto Roches St as the morning crowd continued to grow.

The surge of interest follows last week’s announcement that the long-time Limerick retailer, Silke One-Stop Art and Stationery, will close on Christmas Eve after more than 30 years in business.

One early morning shopper spoke to Limerick Live and said, “I’ve been coming to Silke’s for years and I am so sad to see it go. I came in this morning for one last look around and to hopefully find a good bargain.”

Now, with its windows covered in bold “Clearance Sale” signage, the shop has become a magnet for bargain-seekers and long-time customers hoping for one last look.

The much-loved store, easily recognised by the giant pencil above its entrance, has long been a creative staple for the people of Limerick and beyond.

Proprietor Owen Silke said: "It’s a bittersweet moment. We’ve had incredible support from the people of the region for over three decades. We’ve seen artists grow and flourish, students become teachers, and teachers become artists.”
