A MOTORIST clocked by gardai driving at 169kmph on a motorway in Limerick may have thought he was travelling on the road in Germany.

Danny Quilligan, aged 52, of St Mary’s Terrace, Rathkeale pleaded guilty at Newcastle West Court to dangerous driving on New Year’s Day.

When he was charged with the offence by gardai he “made no reply” after caution.

The court heard the defendant was driving at 169kmph on the M7 at Cloghacloka, Patrickswell.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican was informed that the weather was dry but the road was wet and there were a number of other vehicles on the road at the time.

Michael O’Donnell, solicitor for Mr Quilligan, said the other drivers didn’t have to make any evasive manoeuvres and his client has no previous convictions.

“Mr Quilligan is 52-years-old and drives for a living,” said Mr O’Donnell who added that his client mostly works abroad and mainly in Germany.

“It was a momentary lapse of concentration with regards to where he was. It is a good stretch of road - he is used to driving in those conditions,” said Mr O’Donnell.

Judge Coolican fined Mr Quilligan €750.
