PICTURE this: a balmy summer evening, enjoying a picnic, with sand in your toes and a glass of bubbles in your hand...

That’s what we reveled in for the Mayor’s Picnic event, but instead of a beach in the Bahamas, it was the heart of Limerick city!

Mayor John Moran invited my husband Ger and I to a night of fun, food, and feel-good music on Friday last, and what a fabulous evening it was.

The Mayor wanted to showcase the outdoor area as a space of creativity and imagination, by kicking it off with an event for all to enjoy.

The Georgian Living Room, located at the historical Daniel O’Connell landmark and fountains on O’Connell Street, is a trial outside space which aims to transform Limerick city streets into pedestrianised zones, making the city more accessible and lively.

The hope is that events like this will encourage groups to come together and enjoy the city, from the ground up.

We had a blast, meeting people with all sorts of interests and backgrounds at the event called ‘Picnic with the Mayor’.

Local takeaways provided food for us to enjoy, while live music meant we danced the night away.

It was a heartwarming experience to be outside on a warm summer night in a calm and casual environment, utilising our city streets to the best of our ability.

The weather also got the memo, so I opted for a light, white cotton summer dress, and paired it with a striped blazer and some cream-coloured platforms.

How delightful it was to be part of such a fun event, which showcases thinking outside the box.

This was one to remember and it reminds us to explore new ways to appreciate the wonderful city at our feet.

I so look forward to many more nights like these, weather permitting!
