Stone erected to mark opening of amenity facility at well-loved park

THE MYSTERY of a former mayor’s missing plaque has been solved.

Former southside councillor and first citizen Jim Long was upset to find that a plaque erected to commemorate the opening of an amenity area at Baggot Estate in the city had gone missing.

It mattered to him as it was unveiled during his year as mayor in 2011-12 when he cut the ribbon.

“It was a commemorative stone plaque and a recognition of the buy-in of the community, the residents and the sporting clubs for the enhancement not only of the local area, but also the whole city. Baggot Estate is a jewel in the crown of the southside,” Mr Long said.

Mr Long also led a committee pushing for an improvement to the area which had been blighted by anti-social behaviour.

When he discovered it was missing late last year, he said it “was a matter of concern and bemusement”.

“Who would want to take it,” he asked.

He even requested sitting councillor Fergus Kilcoyne to table a question at this month’s metropolitan meeting.

Cllr Kilcoyne was told the local authority staff did not move the plaque themselves - and were unaware of its disappearance before his question.

In the days leading up to the meeting, Mr Long said the plaque reappeared in the area, leaving him “delighted”
