A BUS travelling to Limerick came perilously close to toppling over after leaving the road this Sunday.

The photograph above, taken by one of the passengers on the 3.40pm Waterford to Limerick service, shows the bus only being stopped from crashing onto its side by bushes and trees.

It is believed the road traffic incident occurred on the N24 Limerick to Waterford Road in the vicinity of Clonmel. It is understood that no serious injuries were suffered by passengers, a number of whom were travelling to Limerick city for college.

It is not known what happened that resulted in the bus crossing over the road, against oncoming traffic and ending up in the ditch on the wrong side of the road.

Emergency services responded promptly and passengers continued on their journey to Limerick on a replacement bus.

A Bus Eireann spokesperson said they are aware of an incident earlier this evening on Route 55 between Waterford and Limerick.

"Local emergency services and Bus Éireann personnel attended the scene promptly. Bus Éireann are investigating how this accident occurred, as per standard procedure for such an incident.

"We would like to thank An Garda Síochána and the emergency services for their response to the incident," said the spokesperson.
