New figures confirm lack of affordable housing in Limerick

NO AFFORDABLE housing was built in Limerick last year, new figures from the Department of Housing show.
The newly released figures show that the government missed its affordable housing targets by almost 60% across the state last year.
The lack of affordable housing being built in Limerick was criticised by Sinn Féin and Limerick city TD Maurice Quinlivan.
“The Department of Housing has released figures to show that no affordable homes were delivered in Limerick last year, with just 17 homes approved under the First Homes Scheme in 2022. It is clear that the government is totally failing to get a grip on the housing crisis. I genuinely think they are clueless to the damage their failed housing policies are having in Limerick,” Deputy Quinlivan said.
Deputy Quinlivan believes that the people of Limerick need affordable homes to be delivered and that he has been “inundated” with calls from those facing eviction following the end of the no-fault eviction ban.
“There are no affordable homes being delivered in Limerick and private renting remains a challenge as there simply are not enough rentals available,” the Sinn Féin deputy added.
Deputy Quinlivan criticised the government (who have been in office for two and a half years) only delivering 1,007 homes across the state that could be described as “remotely affordable”.
“[This] shows that they are just not serious about tackling the affordable housing crisis or indeed any aspect of the housing crisis,” he said.
