Night At The Theatre
On Wednesday, February 1st, the Stables in UL played host to their first musical extravaganza in two years, as three acts took to the stage for a night of music, merriment and memories.
The night opened with Fionn Heffernan (aka FionnVsTheMusic), who despite some technical difficulties, put on a fantastic performance that captivated the audience from start to finish. Fionn sang all original music, and it seemed to have a bit of a cult appeal, with several fans at the front of the stage belting out his tunes. He has a great voice and his music was well received by the crowd, who were won over by his unique style and approach. One of these fans described Fionn as “the real deal” and it is clear that he has a dedicated following.
The middle act was the Hugo Lynn Experience, who started off strong but struggled to maintain their momentum as the night went on. Their stage presence was lacking, and this resulted in a somewhat dull performance. However, their music was still enjoyable, and they received a warm round of applause from the crowd.
The night was brought to a close by the headline act, Theatre.ie, who brought their A-game to the stage and put on a show that will be remembered for a long time to come. Sean Storan, the drummer, was the standout performer, with his intricate and powerful drumming that stole the show. The rest of the band were fantastic too, with great stage presence and a fun, lively crowd.
Theatre.ie was at their strongest when playing their own music, which was a beautiful blend of folk, jazz, and punk drumming. This unique blend of styles somehow worked beautifully, and the crowd was won over by their energy and enthusiasm. The band also did some covers of songs like “Whiskey in The Jar” and “Wild Rover”, but they seemed to be at their most comfortable and performative when playing their own music.
However, the sound engineers were noticeably amateur, and there was a lot of feedback and poor mixing and balancing throughout the night. The stage also felt cramped once the headline act came on, which detracted slightly from the overall experience. Despite this, the crowd was still lively and a big pit gathered around the stage, making for a memorable evening.
While the majority of the crowd were UL students, who are known for being a bit more reserved, this didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the night. Overall, despite its flaws, it was a fantastic performance from all three acts, and the crowd left the Stables feeling entertained and inspired.
In conclusion, last night’s show at the Stables in UL was a fantastic event that showcased some of the best musical talent around. Fionn Heffernan and Theatre.ie both impressed with their unique styles and approach, and we look forward to hearing more from these two artists in the future. With a rating of 7.5/10, the night was a great success and a testament to the musical talent that exists in Limerick.
