Fun-filled Kilteely-Dromkeen Community Festival takes place this weekend

A SOAPBOX derby used to be the centrepiece of the Kilteely-Dromkeen Community Festival but now everybody is scrubbing up and getting dressed up for a mock wedding!

Tom Jones, chair of the festival committee, said their goal is to bring all generations together from the parish, and surrounding ones, for a weekend of fun events. There is everything from Hyrox to a farmer’s market to a fancy dress parade to live music and, of course, a mock wedding.

“The mock wedding on Sunday is basically where we are just trying to get everybody to dress up for the day and have a bit of fun. There's a script, there's 18 people in the choir, we have altar boys - there must be close to 50 in the cast,” said Tom.

The groom is Micko O’Connell and the bride is Eimear Carroll

“They're just doing it totally for the craic. Eimear is on the festival committee and they are both great fun. Liam Ryan is the celebrant. One bridesmaid is coming home from London just to be there. We’ve been rehearsing twice a week. We want to put on a really good show,” said Tom.

The mock wedding takes place in Kilteely village at 3pm this Sunday with the afters in The Street Bar. All are welcome to put on their finery and attend probably the cheapest wedding they will ever attend at just €10.

The adult and children fancy dress parade on Saturday at 6pm is another opportunity to get dressed up. The Fergal Cagney Cup, in memory of the popular local man, will be presented.

The fun begins at 8pm on Friday night in The Teach, Cloverfield with music by Teddy and Cathal Barry and special guest Ann Mulqueen with a jiving competition. Tickets, €10.
