GARDAI have received a number of reports of thefts from cars and vans.

Three separate delivery drivers reported thefts from their vans while making deliveries in Limerick city centre.

After hopping out and leaving their vans unlocked, opportunistic thieves then stole wallets and phones from the vans.

Sergeant Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street garda station, said: "Thieves are very fast, do not give them the opportunity to steal from you, close all windows and lock your car or van every time you leave it unattended, no matter how quick you think you might be".

Due to the recent hot weather, two car owners had left their window open accidentally and a thief reached in, taking loose change and other objects of value.

Sergeant Leetch also offered advice to bicycle owners on how to keep their bikes safe ahead of the return to college.

"When you are at home keep your bicycle locked and locked away out of sight, either in a shed, garage or within the house.

"When you are out remember to have two different types of locks to secure your bicycles to a bike stand. Get to know the bike stands that are covered by CCTV and are in busy areas.

"When you are buying a bike lock be prepared to spend 10 to 20% of the value of your bicycle on the locks.

"Keep a picture of your bicycle and any other identifying details in case of a theft, the more identifying details you have of your bike, the better the chances of you getting it back if it is found".
