THERE has been a significant boost for more than 120 organisations working in communities across Limerick City that will benefit from €2.26 million in funding from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, under the Economic and Social Intervention Fund (ESIF).

Over 120 projects are to receive financial support through this fund, which is a key instrument of the Limerick Regeneration Programme, including Bedford Row and Southill Hub.

Projects supported by the Economic and Social Intervention Fund fall under one of the following themes:

Education and Learning

Health, Wellbeing and Aging Well

Employability and Work

Families and Youth at Risk

Community

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, praised the community projects, saying: “The Economic and Social Intervention Fund is an important source of funding for our efforts to uplift and empower our communities. Having visited all the regeneration areas in recent months, I have witnessed first-hand the transformative impact of these projects. This funding is not just an investment in infrastructure, but in the people of Limerick, ensuring they have access to the opportunities and services they deserve.”

Head of Community Engagement at the University of Limerick, Professor Maura Adshead, was also keen to emphasise how ESIF funding demonstrates the real difference we can make when we put the right supports in the right place at the right time.

Professor Adshead commented: “ESIF funding has enabled us to continue HAPPEE student placements in speech and language, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy in six primary schools in Limerick. These community-based student placements enable the provision of fully supervised in-school therapeutic services. It is a game-changer and we are delighted with ESIF’s support.”

The twelve largest grant recipients from the 2024 Economic and Social Intervention Fund were as follows:

Limerick City Build

Southill Hub

Le Chéile National School

Limerick Island Community Partners

St Mary's National School

Bedford Row

St Munchin's Community Centre

UL Engage

Moyross Community Enterprise Centre

Our Lady of Lourdes CSG

Limerick Youth Service

Moyross Development Company CLG

The overarching aim of the Economic and Social Intervention Fund is to improve access to opportunities for residents of the Regeneration areas and the surrounding communities, as well as enhancing service provision across the statutory and voluntary/community sector.

As such, the fund invests in projects that share these aims, whether the projects are overseen by voluntary and community organisations or other public agencies.
