A PASSENGER has died after a flight heading to Amsterdam was diverted to Shannon Airport following a medical emergency.

A spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group has confirmed that a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight routing from Paramaribo in Suriname on the north eastern coast of South America, to Amsterdam in the Netherlands diverted to Shannon Airport today with a medical emergency.

It is understood that two doctors on board the flight provided assistance to the man in his late 50s after which the aircraft made contact with air traffic controllers, while two hours south of Shannon Airport.

The aircraft landed safely at 04:22am and was met by emergency services and airport staff.

A passenger was then transferred to University Hospital Limerick, however, the man had already been pronounced dead.

It also understood that the man had been travelling on board with his family.

The aircraft departed Shannon shortly before 6:00am.

This is the second KLM aircraft to have diverted to Shannon with a medical emergency since the New Year. A flight was diverted to Shannon on New Year's Day after a woman suffered a suspected stroke. The woman was then rushed to UHL.
