ULSTER Bank, which is quitting the Republic of Ireland market, has sought planning permission to remove elements of its flagship Limerick branch.

As of March 31, day-to-day services at Ulster Bank outlets are no longer available to customers, with all branches closing on April 21 next.

The flagship branch at 95 O’Connell Street in the city centre and a second branch at the Crescent Shopping Centre in Dooadoyle will close their doors for the last time in less than a fortnight as the bank winds down its operations.

In readiness for this, permission is being sought to remove the exterior cash machine and lettering from the protected structure - at O'Connell Street - that it has occupied since May 1977.

A formal decision is expected in the coming weeks.
