KILLINURE NS and Carmel Power go hand in hand like children on their first day of school.
When Ms Power came to the east Limerick school it had two teachers. As she retires after 36 years - 26 as principal - she leaves a staff of 29, 198 pupils and a school transformed after a number of extensions, with a multi-million euro one about to begin.
Ms Power was left in no doubt what she means to the school community at a special retirement function on Thursday night.
It featured contributions from current and former pupils, teachers, parents, board of management, GAA club, parish priest Fr Tom Dunne and many more. Among the gifts was a special commissioned piece created by artist Carol Kelly, an enamelist who works with copper.
Kevin Barry, deputy principal, said he was filled with a blend of emotions – a profound sense of gratitude, nostalgia, admiration.
“Carmel has had a vision since she became principal of our school. She has a passion and unwavering commitment, leading with wisdom, dedication and boundless enthusiasm to leave an indelible mark on the lives of our pupils, staff and the entire school community,” said Mr Barry.
Pat Walsh, long-serving chair of the board of management, said it was a “bittersweet day”.
He described Ms Power as “a guiding force to all in our school community”.
“We wish you a retirement filled with health, laughter, fulfilment with your family, loved ones and friends and we will always remember your wisdom and guidance that has shaped Killinure school,” said Mr Walsh.
