SUPPORTERS, family, friends, candidates and political activists gathered at Limerick Racecourse on Saturday as the count for the local elections began.
An army of tallymen collated the first preferences on the ballot papers as they emerged from the boxes throughout the day here at Limerick Racecourse.
The count proper kicked off at 6:30pm, with the opening results expected some time this evening.
The European ballot papers have been collected by the army and transported to Cork where counting will begin tomorrow.
Meanwhile, votes for the directly elected will be counted on Monday.
