AS PART of the Dare To Believe programme, one lucky Limerick school welcomed paralympian and past pupil Tiarnán O'Donnell.
Tiarnán a past pupil of Milford NS, visited the school and reportedly met with “an incredible reception from students and staff alike” upon his visit. He competed in the Double Sculls in rowing at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
As part of the celebration, students recited poems they had written, and all the children performed a specially composed song for him. Also during his visit, Tiarnán engaged with a smaller group of children, sharing insights into his life as a paralympian.
He spoke about his journey in the sport, the dedication required to compete at the highest level, and the challenges he has overcome.
“It was a particularly special day for the school community, as they celebrated the achievements of a former pupil,” said Olive Doody, organiser of the event.
“The entire school gathered for a special assembly in his honour. Excitement filled the air as children waved flags and enthusiastically chanted his name.
“The school gym was beautifully decorated with the children’s artwork and heartfelt messages of appreciation for Tiarnán.”
A notable moment of the day was when Tiarnán demonstrated his rowing technique on an ergometer.
As he showcased his skills, a few lucky students had the opportunity to row alongside him, experiencing firsthand the discipline and level of physicality that the sport entails.
“The visit was a truly wonderful occasion for everyone at Milford NS. Tiarnán’s presence not only filled the school with pride but also inspired the young students to dream big and work hard to achieve their own goals,” Ms Doody continued.
“His story is a testament to perseverance and passion, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of meeting him.”
