AS WINTER housing fully sets in, now is the ideal time to assess the quality of your fodder.

The quality of winter nutrition on beef farms is a critical factor in ensuring optimum daily live-weight gain and efficiency.

Silage as the primary feed, must be of high quality to meet the nutritional needs of livestock. Ensuring the right balance of energy, protein, and fibre is essential for supporting optimal growth rates in cattle.

To achieve this balance, it’s vital to know the quality of your silage. Silage testing evaluates the nutrient content and quality of the silage, enabling farmers to make informed and accurate decisions about supplementation rates of concentrates.

At the animal health and nutrition beef event next Tuesday, November 26 at 2pm in Salesian Agricultural College, Pallaskenry, farmers can avail of an opportunity to get their silage tested for free using a NIR (near infrared reflectance) silage tester which will give silage sample results within minutes. This takes place from 1.30pm to 2pm.

Topics include parasite control options, winter nutrition and silage quality, winter housing and fodder budgeting and organic farming scheme.
