Rally to take place in Limerick over ending of eviction ban

A PROTEST rally will take place in Limerick this Friday evening ahead of the ending of the ban on evictions from midnight.
The 'winter' ban, which came into effect in October 2022, put a hold on tenants being given notice of eviction. This has now been lifted, but some tenants will have protection up until June 18, depending on when the notice was issued.
The rally, which starts at 6pm at Bedford Row, is being organised by the Community Action and Tenants' Union (CATU) and will be in two parts, according to the CATU Communications Officer, Ruari Fahy.
"People can find out more about CATU at the stall and raise their issues, while the rally will hear from people and their situations."
When Minister of State for Transport, Jack Chambers visited Limerick earlier this week, he said: “The government made the decision to end it [the eviction ban] because it was assessed and brought in for a limited period and extending the eviction ban could actually result in more rental properties leaving the market.
“That would exacerbate the housing difficulties that we are seeing - I would encourage anyone who has received a notice to engage with their local authority, who are trying to provide more options for people.”
